A positive mindset – what a huge difference it makes in my daily life. And like all good things, it takes work to maintain. Something I do when the world looks a bit uninspiring is a gratitude list. A fundamental practice in the recovery world, its power is in its simplicity.
I make a commitment to do it for at least a month. Often it lasts longer because it’s actually enjoyable and I can feel the difference it makes in my outlook. And then I simply make a habit of writing 10 things that I am grateful for as I have my morning coffee. Sometimes they’re big, sometimes small. Often they feel basic (my health, sunshine, family). Often they’re based on what touched me the day before. But it doesn’t seem to matter what the content is, the effect is real.
So, here then, is today’s list:
1. Dino snuggles
2. The Met’s Costume Art exhibit – breathtaking
3. A friend who appreciates fashion the way I do and was the perfect companion for the Met show
4. Fuschia peonies
5. Time to meditate
6. Random interaction with a group of 70ish women experiencing the subway for the first time. God, I love NYC energy
8. Theatergoer who wants to know what’s in my cup, is disappointed to find it’s sparkling water, and smiles at me anyway
9. Friend who invited me to see John Lithgow’s touching, disturbing, confronting performance in Giant
10. Humanity in all its forms
Admittedly, this is not a typical list. Yesterday was a *very* NYC day. But I think you get the gist.
A couple of other notes:
- There’s something powerful in doing this with a friend and sharing lists daily.
- Small can pack a big punch in gratitude listing.
Last thought is my bonus for today. May it serve you as well:
11. The courage to try new things.
